This simple German greeting will get you a quality beer anywhere German is spoken...in this case Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg is probably best known as the location for much of the filming of the movie "The Sound of Music" from 1965 and starring Julie Andrews. Believe me brother, it really is as beautiful in real life as depicted in the movie.
Nevertheless, this blog is called GlobalBeerBlog for a reason, and it's not to review movies. You'll notice from the picture on the right that I'm standing in front of the Stiegl Brewery in Salzburg. This was two summers ago and much to my dismay the public tours were canceled due to remodeling and refurbishment. Actually that's probably a good thing because I fully intended to test the limits of their sampling policy. At least I would have been walking distance from our hotel.
Now about Stiegl beer (Goldbrau): It's pretty damn good. Very balanced. A lighter lager that goes great with many foods, or in my case, all foods. Also very refreshing. As an average American beer drinker this brew was a great transition to the heavier beers that I enjoyed on the trip. Stick with the bottles, which is always a good rule of thumb. The canned form just doesn't do it justice.
What, you expected some elitist description discussing notes of this, character of that, hints of this, aromas of that, etc.?
This is beer people, and I won't stoop to using snobby labels and descriptions like the wine snobs do.
If anyone knows where I can purchase Stiegl here in the States please let me know. I'd love to enjoy it again.
Up next...more Austrian brews before moving on to Germany.
